Refined Bloom – Tote Bag Handcrafted from Vintage Chrysanthemum Motif Obi
This one-of-a-kind tote is handcrafted in London from a vintage silk obi dating back to the early 2000s, sourced from a trusted kimono dealer in Kanagawa, Japan. The fabric features an elegant chrysanthemum motif—an enduring symbol of longevity, nobility, and rejuvenation in Japanese tradition. Soft yet structured, the obi’s original craftsmanship brings timeless refinement to a contemporary silhouette. The interior is lined with Japanese recycled fabric from Uni Fabric, a Kyoto-based specialist in sustainable textiles, adding a thoughtful layer of history and care.

The Story Behind the Piece
Once part of a formal kimono ensemble, this chrysanthemum-patterned obi has been carefully reimagined into a modern tote that honors its cultural roots. Multiple vintage obis were also used to create the straps, giving them a nuanced, layered appearance and a sophisticated textural contrast. Each element has been preserved and assembled by hand in my London studio, offering a unique accessory that carries the spirit of both tradition and thoughtful reinvention.
