This elegant tote bag is meticulously handcrafted from a vintage silk obi dating back to the 1990s, sourced from a trusted kimono dealer in Kanagawa, Japan. The fabric is adorned with traditional pine and flowing water motifs—symbols of longevity, resilience, and the constant movement of life deeply revered in Japanese culture. Complementing the obi fabric, half of the bag’s body is crafted from soft chirimen—a traditional Japanese crepe fabric known for its gentle texture and subtle texture—sourced by Risa during her travels in Japan. Originally designed as part of formal kimono attire, these textiles now bring enduring beauty and tactile elegance to a modern accessory.

The Story Behind the Piece
Once a vintage silk obi, this fabric was worn as a traditional sash accompanying a kimono. The pine represents steadfastness and endurance, while the flowing water signifies adaptability and the passage of time—together capturing the balance of strength and fluidity in nature. Carefully sourced from a reputable dealer in Kanagawa, the fabric was preserved with great care before being thoughtfully transformed by hand in my London atelier.
Half of the tote’s body features chirimen fabric, prized for its soft, slightly textured crepe weave that offers a delicate yet durable feel, enhancing both comfort and sophistication. This fabric, sourced directly from Japan, adds a subtle tactile contrast that complements the smooth obi silk perfectly.
