The Story Behind the Piece
This piece began its life as a vintage silk obi, a traditional sash worn over a kimono.
The flowing water pattern, or Ryūsui, represents harmony, movement, and calm strength—making this tote a wearable expression of timeless elegance. The fabric was sourced from a trusted textile dealer in Kyoto’s historic Nishijin district. It was carefully preserved before being transformed by hand in my London atelier.
The interior is lined with a silk kimono featuring a delicate plum blossom motif (ume)—a symbol of hope, renewal, and quiet strength. In Japanese culture, plum blossoms bloom at the end of winter, signalling the arrival of spring and new beginnings. Each stitch honours the fabric’s origin while giving it new purpose in the modern world.
How to Style It
