The Story Behind the Piece
Originally woven into a ceremonial obi—the elegant sash worn over kimono—this fabric carries with it the refined spirit of Kyoto textile art.
The Ryūsui motif, with its gentle waves, evokes the natural rhythm of flowing water. In Japanese culture, it signifies adaptability and peace, making this piece a quiet statement of enduring beauty. The flap features a silk kimono fabric adorned with ume (plum blossoms)—a cherished symbol of renewal and quiet strength, blooming bravely in the final days of winter.
The silk was sourced in Kyoto’s renowned Nishijin district and carefully reimagined at my London atelier.
The lining fabric is Japanese cotton chirimen, sourced directly from Japan. Chirimen refers to the fine, irregular textured creases visible on the fabric’s surface. This unique texture helps to resist wrinkling and creates a distinctive, elegant feel. Thanks to its textured finish, the fabric has a smooth, soft touch, making it easy to slip books in and out without hassle.
