The Story Behind the Piece
This 1980s obi had long been tucked away in a family chest of drawers in Shizuoka, Japan. After the passing of her grandmother, the granddaughter kindly donated it to me, wishing for it to be transformed into a handbag as a way of honouring her grandmother’s memory. She hoped the beauty of the remaining fabric would be shared with the world. The obi itself features a celebratory pattern traditionally worn for weddings and coming-of-age ceremonies – a joyful and auspicious design that once graced special moments, now given a new chapter in its life.
This fabric carries with it the refined spirit of Kyoto textile art.
